What a registered migration agent does
Most people picture form-filling. That is the smallest part of the work. The substance is:
- Assessing eligibility honestly — including telling you when you are not eligible, or not yet eligible, before you spend money
- Choosing the pathway — often several visas could theoretically work, and the differences in cost, processing time and risk are large
- Building the evidence — a decision-maker only sees what you submit; the case is won or lost on whether your documents actually prove your claims
- Managing risk — study gaps, prior refusals, health or character issues, relationship evidence that is thin on one of the four pillars
- Handling correspondence — requests for further information usually come with deadlines that cannot be extended
How to check any Brisbane migration agent is genuinely registered
This takes about three minutes and it is the single most useful thing you can do before engaging anyone.
- Ask for their MARN — a Migration Agents Registration Number. Every registered migration agent has one. Ours is 2619525.
- Search the public OMARA register at omara.gov.au by MARN or by name.
- Check the record matches — the name, the business, and that the registration is current.
- Check for conditions or sanctions — the register shows disciplinary history.
If someone cannot give you a MARN, or the number does not match the register, stop there. Giving immigration assistance without registration is unlawful in Australia unless the person is exempt (see below).
Why this matters more than reviews. A polished website and a wall of testimonials tell you nothing about whether the person is permitted to advise you. The register is the only check that does.
Migration agent, immigration lawyer, or do it yourself?
There is no universally correct answer. The honest version:

One thing worth knowing, because it confuses people: since 22 March 2021, Australian lawyers holding an unrestricted practising certificate are no longer part of the OMARA scheme. They are regulated by their state or territory legal body instead. So if you search the OMARA register for an immigration lawyer and find nothing, that does not necessarily mean anything is wrong — it may simply mean they are regulated elsewhere. Check their practising certificate with the relevant state legal body instead.

When doing it yourself is reasonable: a clean, simple application, no refusal history, no health or character issues, plenty of time, and confidence reading Home Affairs guidance carefully.
When it usually is not: any previous refusal or cancellation, a Schedule 3 issue, partner visas where the relationship is newer or long-distance, complex work history for a skills assessment, anything with a deadline you cannot afford to miss.
What "best migration agent in Brisbane" should actually mean
Search results cannot rank honesty. Judge on things you can verify:
- Registration is current and unconditional — check the register yourself
- They tell you what could go wrong — an agent who only describes the upside is selling, not advising
- Fees are explained before you commit — in writing, itemised, with government charges separated from professional fees
- They will decline work — a practice that takes every matter regardless of merit is a volume operation
- You speak to the person doing the work — not only to a salesperson
A promise of a guaranteed visa is the clearest warning sign there is. No agent, lawyer or consultant can guarantee an outcome. The decision belongs to the Department of Home Affairs, and anyone claiming otherwise is either misleading you or intending to.

Common questions
Do I need a migration agent for a straightforward visa? Not always. For a simple application with no complicating factors, many people succeed on their own. It is worth a conversation first so you know which category you are in.
What does a migration agent cost in Brisbane? Professional fees vary by visa type and complexity, and are separate from the Department's own application charges. We set out both in writing before you engage us.
Can you help if my visa was refused? Often, yes — but timeframes for review are strict and start running from the date of the decision. Contact us as soon as possible rather than after the deadline.
